Family photographer in Woodford

Let’s start with the question I get asked most often: “What should we wear?” It’s totally normal to feel a bit of pressure when it comes to choosing outfits for your family photos - you want everyone to look lovely but still feel like themselves. And let’s be honest, the idea of coordinating outfits for multiple people (especially if small children are involved!) can feel like a mission in itself. The good news is that it really doesn’t have to be complicated.

I’ve photographed countless families - in homes, in parks, in gardens, you name it - and the families who look the best in photos are the ones who feel comfortable and confident in what they’re wearing. So, here are my top tips to take the stress out of outfit planning and help you feel totally relaxed going into your session.

Go for coordinated, not matching

You don’t need to all wear white tops and jeans. Instead, think about choosing a colour palette and letting everyone choose clothes that fit within that. For example, soft earthy tones, muted blues, warm neutrals, or pastel shades all work beautifully. It creates harmony in your photos without looking too “done”.

Comfort always wins

If your little one hates wearing that shirt or you feel fidgety in a dress you haven’t worn in years - it’s not the right choice. When everyone feels good in what they’re wearing, it shows. Movement, cuddles, piggybacks, and running around are all part of the session, so dress in a way that lets you move freely and feel like you.

Think layers and texture

Layers add visual interest without being distracting. A cardigan, denim jacket, or flowy scarf can add lovely detail. Natural textures like linen, cotton, wool, and knits photograph beautifully and give your images warmth and depth.

Keep patterns soft and minimal

A little pattern is totally fine (a floral dress, subtle stripes, or a classic check), but try to avoid anything too bold, neon, or logo-heavy. You don’t want your clothes to be the first thing people notice when they look at your photos - you want them to see you.

Go cosy and casual for in-home sessions

If we’re photographing in your home, feel free to lean into that laid-back vibe. Soft jumpers, leggings, barefoot babies - it’s all part of the magic of telling your story where it naturally unfolds. I promise you don’t need to dress up for your home to feel special in photos.

A quick note about shoes (or no shoes)

If we’re outdoors, comfortable shoes are essential - we’ll likely do a bit of walking, and your little ones will be on the move. If we’re at home, I often suggest going barefoot - it feels more natural and relaxed, and it just makes sense in your space.

Need a second opinion?

I always encourage families to lay out the clothes ahead of time and send me a quick photo if they’re unsure. I’m happy to offer input or gently tweak a combination so you feel confident walking into your session.

At the end of the day, the best outfit choice is the one that lets you be present, relaxed, and comfortable. That’s when the real magic happens.
