Unless you have been living under a rock, you must have seen countless photos online from autumn photo sessions. They are very popular with families all around the world as the results are pretty much always spectacular. If you are not sure why you should be booking an autumn photo session for your family this year, let me give you 5 reasons to persuade you to have one!
1. Beautiful and rich colours
If there is one thing that it is so obvious about autumn it's the beautiful and rich colours of the foliage outside. Golden yellows, warm oranges, vibrant reds, muted browns... it's a photographer's dream to photograph families against such a varied and colourful backdrop.
2. Gorgeous light
With the sun setting down quicker and its path sitting lower in the sky, there is this gorgeous warm light which provides a lovely warm glow everywhere. Photos taken at the golden hour (one hour before sunset) are breathtaking, as the daylight is softer than when the sun is higher in the sky. Bonus being that the golden hour happens much earlier in the day, meaning no cranky and overtired kids past their bedtimes!
3. Outdoor fun for everyone
Yes, I love spring and summer photos sessions for various reasons. But these don't provide what autumn photo sessions can provide... dry leaves to play with! Raise your hand if you don't ever kick leaves with your kids... This is nature's fun and colourful prop that makes everyone smile, which results in happy and joyful images.
4. Autumn outfits
As much as we love hot summer days, there is something so special about getting our autumn clothes out of storage... am I right? Think check shirts, jean jackets, wooly scarves, warm hats... These are perfect for your autumn photo sessions as they will look great against the colourful leaves. If you struggle with ideas on what to wear to your outdoor session, I have a Pinterest board dedicated to autumn and winter outfit ideas (plus I'm always game to talk clothes and give you some pointers on what you can wear).
5. Your family Christmas cards (and presents for grandparents) are ready!
If you like to send personalised Christmas cards, then a beautiful family portrait against rich and colourful trees is exactly what you need! And if you are wondering what to get grandparents this year, a set of prints or an album full of beautiful images is one of the best gifts to give.
