Pregnancy photoshoot Westminster

You’ve booked your maternity photo session, found the perfect location, and you're feeling excited. But then the forecast shows clouds... or worse, rain. So what happens next? As an East London photographer, I've learned to expect the unexpected when it comes to weather. And more importantly, to work with it. Here’s everything you need to know about my approach to outdoor maternity sessions and the great British weather.

Flexibility is part of the process

If it looks like the weather will truly get in the way - think heavy rain, strong wind, or stormy skies - we’ll simply reschedule. Your comfort and enjoyment are always my top priority, and we want you to feel relaxed and happy, not soggy and cold. I usually send out a message 24–48 hours before the session and if the forecast looks miserable, we can move the session to another day. There's no pressure or penalty.

Embracing moody skies

That said, not all clouds are bad news. Soft, overcast light is actually beautiful for photography. It’s flattering, even, and gentle on the skin (no harsh shadows, no squinting). Cloudy skies can give your images a dreamy, intimate feel, especially if we’re shooting in a park, by the river, or in a leafy woodland spot. A bit of atmosphere adds magic. You’d be surprised how lovely a session can be under a blanket of grey.

Let's stay at home

If it turns out to be a washout and you're still up for photos, why not switch to an in-home maternity session?

Your home is the perfect place to capture calm, cosy moments. Think bare feet, hot tea, knit cardigans, and soft window light. Many families end up loving their in-home sessions even more than they expected.

It’s all about flexibility and choosing the vibe that feels right for you.

What to bring (just in case)

If we go ahead with an outdoor session and the weather is changeable, here are a few things I recommend bringing:

  • A clear umbrella (great in photos and keeps you dry)
  • A warm layer or coat between shots
  • A blanket to sit on
  • Spare shoes if we’ll be walking through grass or mud

Even if we don’t end up needing these things, they give us options and peace of mind.

You’re not alone

Weather worries are completely normal. The important thing to remember is: you’re in safe hands. I always come prepared with a backup plan, a flexible mindset, and lots of experience photographing in less-than-perfect conditions.

At the end of the day, maternity photos are about connection, not perfection. Whether we shoot under sunshine or soft grey skies, the most beautiful thing in every photo will always be you.

“Alina is amazing! We are so happy with our maternity and newborn photos - absolutely worth every penny. She took the time to understand what we wanted, and the results were even better than we imagined. So talented, warm, and professional. We especially loved her natural, lifestyle approach that beautifully captured these precious moments. Highly recommended!”
