Family photography East London
Booking a family photoshoot is exciting, but you still might be nervous. After all, it's not something you do very often so you want to make sure you have a positive experience. There are questions you may be asking about a family photoshoot and I am here to answer the most common ones. Hopefully they will squash your worries and put your nerves at ease!
“Alina is an amazing photographer, we were so happy with the results of our family shoot. She knew exactly how to get the best out of our toddlers to get lovely, natural shots without anyone getting bored or upset, and got us all to relax and enjoy ourselves. Alina also provided really helpful advice ahead of time around locations for our outdoor shoot, colours to wear that photograph well etc. We are so pleased with our photos, we will definitely book with Alina again in the future.”
Why should you get family photos done?
Let's start with this one. There may be a specific reason for a photoshoot (pregnancy, new baby, wedding, special event). But sometimes it's not about a grand milestone happening in your life. We know as parents how quickly the kids are growing, how time flies. We want to bottle up how little they are, how funny and sweet they are RIGHT NOT and that's when having a family photoshoot can help. We can freeze this moment in time so you have a tangible proof of how you once were as a family. These photos will be in your family album for years and years, and they will be cherished by you, your kids, and even their kids.
What to expect at a family photo session?
Firstly, don't expect any silly props or awkward, rigid or unnatural poses. That is NOT what I do. My sessions are relaxed, fun, and most of the time unscripted. I might move you towards better light, or make sure you look good - but other than that, I will ask you to smile, have fun with your kids, play and interact with them and let me work my magic!
How long is a typical family photo session?
Your session will last anywhere from 1 hour to 2 hours - depending on a number of factors (size of family, age of kids, need for breaks / feeding, if we have to walk to / from location of your photoshoot etc). However, I don't ever want you to feel rushed or that you are "on the clock". This kind of stress kills the mood! Don't worry about the time, there is always plenty of it to take fantastic family photos.
Are family pictures worth it?
Absolutely. It is an investment in your family's legacy. Photographs help us connect with our families, strengthen our bonds and tell stories of who we are as a family. By seeing the photos of themselves, children learn about their place in the family, their role and their form their identity.
Where should I have our family photo session?
I love taking photos at home as I believe your home is another member of your family. It's there for you every day, for every milestone, through ups and downs. It holds stories, memories, is full of love and happiness. It's such an important part of your family. But you may also want to take photos in a different location, a place that has a special spot in your heart. Perhaps it's your family's favourite park, or a place you often go to for walks. The decision is yours and I am here to help you decide and plan your photo session.
What should I wear to a family photoshoot outside?
When you book me as your family photographer, I provide you with a styling guide which gives you tips on what to wear. If you decide to have your photoshoot outdoors, it depends on the season as we want to compliment the nature around us (for example, richer tones in autumn / winter, softer tones in spring / summer).
What should I wear to family photoshoot at home?
Similarly to the question above, I help you with choosing best outfits for your in-door family photoshoot. We look at your home decor, how much light you have, what colours you are drawn to. But generally I always recommend light and neutral tones as those are the ones that photograph best.
What if my kids don't behave during the photoshoot?
I know you want your kids to be on their best behaviour. But trust me when I tell you - as a mum of two kids, I have seen it ALL. I have photographed numerous families with some children being more extrovert than others and luckily I have a few tricks up my sleeve that will keep everyone happy, resulting in beautiful photos.
How do you pose for family pictures?
I don't believe in rigid, structured and awkward posing. I will never ask you to do something that doesn't feel natural. I may ask you to stand where the light is best, or sit down in a good spot - but essentially I always tell my clients to just enjoy themselves and their families. It's about you having fun!
